Butterfly Valve
A butterfly valve is a device that allows you to achieve better flow control. The design uses a metallic disc that rotates a quarter-turn at a time around a fixed-stem axis. The 90-degree turns provide quick-action control between open and closed positions. In addition, the disc is generally sized equally to the internal diameter of the adjoining pipe to give full-color capability.

Compact design: Butterfly valves are compact and lightweight, making them ideal for applications where space is limited. This is particularly beneficial in large piping systems where weight and space are critical factors.
Cost-effectiveness: Butterfly valves are generally more cost-effective than other valve types, especially in larger sizes. Their simpler design and fewer components contribute to lower manufacturing and maintenance costs.
Quick operation: Like ball valves, butterfly valves are quarter-turn valves that allow rapid opening and closing. This makes them suitable for applications requiring quick shut-off or frequent operation.
Flow control: The angle of the disc controls the flow rate through the valve.
Wide range of sizes: Butterfly valves are available in a wide range of sizes, suitable for both small—and large-scale applications.
Butterfly Valve Standard Features
Rugged epoxy coated ductile iron body with stainless steel disc for maximum corrosion resistance
01
Unique wave line seat and special disc shape reduces the torque required to turn the valve and extends the seal life
02
Lower torque also reduces the size of the actuator, lowering the cost of the valve assembly
03
Two piece shaft design enhances the flow capacity of the valve
04
Valves direct mount to actuator with standard ISO5211 international standards
05
Butterfly Valve components
The butterfly valve consists of only four main components: body, disk, stem and seat.

Butterfly valve body
Butterfly valves generally have bodies that fit between two pipe flanges, the most common being lug and wafer body design.
Butterfly valve disk
The disk is how the valve stops flow – it is equivalent to a plug in a plug valve, a gate in a gate valve or a ball in a ball valve. There are variations in disk design and orientation in order to improve flow, sealing and/or operating torque.

Butterfly valve Stem
The stem of the butterfly valve may be a one-piece shaft or a two-piece (split-stem) design. The stem in most resilient seated designs is protected from the media, thus allowing an efficient selection of material with respect to cost and mechanical properties.
Butterfly valve Seat
The seat of a resilient-seat butterfly valve utilises an interference fit between the disk edge and the seat to provide shutoff. The material of the seat can be made from many different elastomers or polymers. The seat may be bonded to the body or it may be pressed or locked in.

Detailed Operation
Disc Rotation
The core component of the butterfly valve is the disc, which rotates to control the flow.
Closed Position
When the disc is perpendicular to the direction of flow, it completely blocks the passage, stopping any fluid from passing through.
Open Position
Rotating the disc 90 degrees aligns it with the flow direction, allowing fluid to pass through the valve.
The construction of a butterfly valve is relatively simple, with the rotation of the valve disc controlling the fluid flow. In the closed position, the disc blocks the valve bore while in the open position, the disc is oriented perpendicular to the flow direction to allow flow. Butterfly valves generally provide bi-directional flow and shutoff capability. However, they are not full-bore, which renders them unsuitable for pigging or swabbing. The body material is ductile iron with an epoxy powder coat on both internal and external surfaces. The valves are typically operated by handwheels, gears, or actuators, or a combination thereof, according to the specific application requirement and technical specifications.
